DENTURES

RESTORE YOUR SMILE

When you’re missing or have problems with most or all of your teeth, it can be extremely difficult to live your normal life. Partial or full tooth loss can affect your self-confidence. If left untreated, you could wind up with jawbone loss and other issues. Not to mention that having many missing teeth is uncomfortable.

Solutions for Missing Teeth

Luckily, dentures can bring back your smile and make chewing and eating a normal process again. While dentures sometimes have a bad reputation, they can actually be a comfortable and convenient way to restore an entire mouth or entire arch of teeth.

With dentures, you can have a comfortable, functional smile again. One that allows you to speak, chew, and eat comfortably. At Homer Dental Center, Dr. Anne Adamson provides many kinds of dentures, including traditional dentures and implant-supported options.

Full Dentures

Conventional Dentures

Conventional dentures are done after your gums completely heal. To prepare for conventional dentures, you may need to have any remaining natural teeth removed. Then, you’ll need to let your gums heal before getting the denture.

Conventional dentures can be put in place around eight weeks after the last tooth extraction. A patient’s gum healing time can vary. Dr. Adamson will work with you to ensure your mouth is ready for dentures.

During this healing time, it is important to maintain proper dental hygiene and an appropriate diet to facilitate healing.

Immediate Dentures

If you don’t want to wait to have dentures while your gums heal, immediate dentures are a good option.

Immediate dentures can be worn immediately after the last tooth is removed. Immediate dentures are recommended as a temporary treatment until conventional dentures can be worn.

So, you can wear immediate dentures for a couple of weeks until your gums are healed. Then, Dr. Adamson will transition you to your permanent dentures.

Overdenture

Dr. Adamson will try to save whatever possible from your natural teeth. Natural teeth help maintain the jawbone in good condition and provide good support for the dentures. The overdenture is designed to accommodate existing teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

While traditional dentures have their place, many dentists recommend implant-supported dentures as a more comfortable, durable alternative.

Implant-supported dentures function similarly to traditional dentures, but they are much more secure. Instead of just fitting into your mouth, implant-supported dentures are a specific subset of overdentures that attach to dental implants.

The great thing about implant-supported dentures is that they only require a few dental implants, usually four, to support an entire arch of teeth. This process is called All-on-4®. Once the dental implants heal, the implant denture attaches to the titanium posts, creating a strong, lasting foundation.

Implant dentures can be removable or permanent.

You can also have partial implant-supported dentures or full implant-supported dentures. This is based on how many healthy teeth you have in that arch of teeth.

Do I Need Traditional or Implant-Supported Dentures?

Generally, implant-supported dentures are more secure and appear to be more natural. They also help prevent bone loss. On the other hand, they require longer preparation and healing than traditional dentures. They can also be more expensive up front, but they tend to be cost-effective in the long term.

The best way to know the ideal dentures for you is by booking an appointment with Dr. Adamson or a dentist who is local to you. She will assess your dental health needs and the current state of your teeth to determine the right dentures. She will also take into account your budget and insurance coverage.

Partial Dentures

When to Consider Partial Dentures?

Today the most widely utilized dentures are partial and complete dentures. A partial denture can be removable and fills in the spaces left by missing teeth. By utilizing partial dentures, we can prevent your other teeth from shifting or moving position, which causes a crooked smile.

Partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases. The base has a metal frame and clasps that attach to your surrounding teeth.

Denture Care and Maintenance

The care and maintenance of your dentures depend on the type of denture being used. Dr. Adamson will detail the do’s and don’ts when wearing dentures, but there are a few general rules that need to be followed by each patient:

  • Dentures need to be worn continuously in the first few weeks until the patient gets used to them. Afterward, the denture can be removed during the night for additional comfort.
  • When not in use, the dentures must be placed in a special container and fully covered with water to preserve flexibility.
  • Dentures need to be cleaned every day with a non-abrasive cleanser and a toothbrush with soft bristles.
  • Visit the dentist regularly for adjustments and routine checks on gums and remaining teeth.
  • If you have permanent implant dentures, you should brush and floss them every day.

Dentures can change your appearance, boost self-esteem, and improve your eating experience. With advancements in dental technology, dentures are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever before.
