HOMETOWN DENTISTRY

FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

In Alaska, family and friends are especially important, as we often rely on one another through difficult times. At Homer Dental Center, we know how much your family means to you, and they mean a lot to us, too.

As members of the community, our dental team is very involved in supporting local families. Whether it’s through sponsoring esports teams or local clubs or saying hello at shops, we want to foster a friendly community, both in the dental office and outside of it.

Dr. Adamson provides family dentistry services for all ages, so you can make our office your stop for all dental needs.

Why Family Dentistry Is Important

For Prevention

Prevention is key to dental health and your family dentist can do just that! At Homer Dental Center, we can pinpoint oral health care concerns before they become serious problems. Why not treat an issue now rather than wait to see if it worsens?

Using dental X-rays and exams, we can see whether permanent teeth are coming in or if wisdom teeth need to be removed. These are conditions that you may not be able to figure out on your own unless pain occurs.

For Dental Cleanings

So, you brush and floss your teeth daily. That’s great, but you still will miss some important areas of your teeth. At our dental office, we can utilize our special tools to get your gums and other hard-to-reach spots. We can give your mouth a more thorough cleaning than you can do at home.

Dental Checkups for a Healthier Smile

Regular dental checkups are a must for maintaining good oral health. Dental checkups are non-invasive and are not painful.

During a checkup, Dr. Adamson inspects your teeth, gums, and mouth for potential problems. She will also tell you about your dental health and any concerns you have.

What to Expect

Your first dental checkup with Dr. Adamson involves a discussion about your medical and dental history so that the doctor is fully informed.

The next step is typically dental X-rays, which reveal any dental problems that are not easily visible. The doctor will also perform a hands-on examination to evaluate the condition of your teeth and gums.

Following the examination, the dentist will go over the results with you and decide the next steps if any are needed. If there are multiple dental procedures needed, a treatment plan will be created for you.

The last phase of the checkup involves a series of recommendations to improve your oral health. Instructions about proper brushing and flossing are common, especially when the existing routine is not satisfying.

During the subsequent checkups, the dentist may not go through all the steps mentioned above. Dr. Adamson will check the problem areas to record their progress, provide feedback on how you implemented recommendations, and suggest further improvements or changes in your daily dental care routine.

How Often Should You Go to the Dentist?

Dental checkups are necessary at least every six months. But, depending on your dental health Dr. Adamson may increase the number of regular checkups.

High-risk patients may need to increase the number of annual checkups to three or even four. People who fall in this category are patients who:

Dr. Adamson will take your dental needs into account when recommending the frequency of checkups.

We recommend taking the time to check in on your children’s brushing habits around once a month. When they first start brushing, you will need to take more time to educate them on good brushing practices and help them brush. Once your children have it down, checking in regularly will still be helpful.

Even adults can use the reminders about how to brush and keep consistent habits. Big life changes like having a child or moving can interrupt a good habit, so make sure to increase your focus on keeping your teeth healthy during that time!

Our office has many resources they suggest for your family to learn about oral health care.

The American Dental Association has an oral health topics section that can be helpful for patients looking to learn more about their teeth.

Colgate also has several oral health topic pages reviewed by medical professionals.

You can always visit our SPEAR video library to learn more about our variety of treatments, and other treatments offered by orthodontists.

Brushing your teeth and flossing is one of the best things you can do for your smile. When you brush your teeth, you want to hold your toothbrush lightly. Brushing too hard can actually contribute to gum recession. Brush in circular motions, taking time especially to clean near your gumline.

When you floss, you will get around a 6-inch piece of floss, wrapping it around both of your fingers, to create a taught line. Work it between each tooth in your smile.

Our SPEAR educational videos on brushing and flossing can be a great resource. You can even have a family health night and watch these together.

Our Pediatric Dentistry Services

Dr. Adamson offers many dental services for children, including cleanings, X-rays, dental fillings, dental sealants, and more.

With the help of her caring dental team, she helps each child learn good dental hygiene tips for daily life. During your child’s appointment, she will thoroughly check their teeth for signs of cavities, orthodontic problems, and many other dental issues.

Dental Sealants Protect Your Teeth

Our teeth play an important role in our lives, and we need to make sure that we keep them protected. Protection from tooth decay is important—that’s where dental sealants come into play.

This non-invasive procedure involves a dental hygienist or dentist applying a thin coating to your teeth. This liquid coating is cured with a light. Dental sealants help prevent tooth decay, and they are especially great for kids who have adult teeth.

You can watch our video on dental sealants for some visual help.

Brushing and flossing twice a day does help to remove food particles and plaque from your teeth, but it does not reach into a tooth’s depressions and grooves.

By utilizing dental sealants, we can help protect those often-missed areas of your teeth from food and bacteria.

The use of dental sealants in Homer is extremely safe for your teeth and overall health.
