What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a restorative dentistry option for replacing missing or broken teeth. They are made up of two main parts: the titanium post and the artificial tooth.

The titanium post goes into the jaw and gums where it’s left to heal. This process usually takes around 6 months. During that time, the post fuses with your mouth, allowing it to function just like a natural tooth root.

After the post heals in the mouth, a replacement tooth, usually a dental crown, is attached to the post using a small piece called an abutment. The two parts, the post and tooth, work together so the dental implant looks and functions just like your regular teeth.

Dental Implant Restorations

At Homer Dental Center, Dr. Anne Adamson offers both placement of dental implants and restoration of existing implants. When the crown is placed on the implant, the implant is “restored.” Some people choose to visit an oral surgeon to have the implant placed and then have the implant restored by a cosmetic dentist like Dr. Adamson.

We even provide CEREC same-day crowns, so you can restore your existing dental implant in just one visit.

If you have had a dental implant placed before and have an issue with it, she can also repair the existing implant or crown.

The Many Different Kinds of Dental Implants

At Homer Dental Center, we offer many dental implant solutions to suit your needs and restore your smile:

  • Single Dental Implants: Single dental implants replace one missing or damaged tooth. They are the simplest dental implant treatments and work best if most of your smile is in good shape.
  • Implant Bridges: If you have issues with more than one tooth in a row, an implant bridge can restore multiple teeth. The dental implants support a bridge of new teeth, so you only need two dental implants to repair many teeth in a row.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures:Implant-supported dentures, which often use the All-on-4® treatment concept or All-on-6® system, allow you to get an entire arch or mouth of teeth with just a few dental implants. The denture attaches to the dental implants, so you can completely renew your smile with a strong, natural-looking denture.

With implant-supported dentures, you can also opt for snap-on dentures, which you can remove at night, instead of having them permanently bonded to the implants. There are options for every tooth replacement need.

The Dental Implant Process

Consultation

Dr. Adamson or your local dentist will sit down with you and discuss your tooth replacement options. We will evaluate your smile to see if a dental implant will work for your smile. To be considered for an implant you will need:

  • Healthy Gums
  • A Dense Enough Jawbone
  • Ability to Undergo Jaw Surgery

Dr. Adamson will also discuss the cost of implants and how many implants you need.

Implant Placement

We will place one or all of the implants you need while you are under general anesthesia. Once the implants have been placed, you will have a temporary tooth covering the titanium implant.

The implant will bond with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Your implant will be permanent, just like a tooth root.

Restoration

Once the implant has been healed, we will place an abutment on top of the implant. This is what your crown will attach to. We will then create a custom crown for your implant. All together, the implant and restoration will work and look just like a regular tooth.

Your crown will last around 15 years and can be replaced while leaving the implant placed in your jaw.

Dental implants are a durable, beautiful way to repair issues with your smile. You can have a natural-looking restoration that feels and works just like a regular tooth.

With dental implants, you will feel great showing off your smile, all while avoiding discomfort from less permanent tooth replacement options. Dental implants last much longer and look way more natural than many other dental solutions.
